Marblehead Regatta 18th January 2017

Picture
We had a good turnout from club members but no visitors. Forecast was for dull/misty weather with only a 3/4 mph wind in the morning diminishing to nothing by mid-day and that’s what we got.
To say it was slow is an overstatement as you can see from the results only 8 races, just about everyone was up and down the fleet depending on whether you found what breeze was going. If you got a good start that also helped.
There wasn’t much in it between the top three but David Thomas was the one showing us the way round in mastering the conditions in the end better than most.
There was a lot of friendly banter and we enjoyed sailing a boat which hasn’t had much of an airing lately.
Come on all you Northern and Midland clubs blow the cobwebs of those Marblehead’s and join us on the next meeting which is on Wednesday 15th February 2017.
Check our calendar out for further competitions you can join us in.

Craig Raistrick (Rotherham) sailing an MX16 won 13 of the 16 races, after discards only one place separated Peter Cogill (Rotherham) from David Alston (Leicester) both sailing V9s.
The next Regatta in the Series is Saturday 6th February.

Model Yacht Section

Radio control yacht sailing takes place twice a week throughout the year on Saturday and Wednesday mornings 9:30 - 13:30. The yachts we sail come in a wide variety and costs but all will fit into a medium sized car. Once two yachts meet on the water they are soon competing against one another being light  hearted or in a more competitive manner. We aim to bring the great hobby of radio controlled sailing to a wide audience, so if you are interested why not visit the club and have a chat with club members. We have some of the best facilitates in the country with an excellent clubhouse and sailing water, which is just 15 minutes from the M1 Jns 30 and 31.
Each month of the year the club have
a regattas; RG65 yachts on the second Saturday, One Metre yachts, on the fourth Saturday, with Marbleheads racing on the third Wednesday,  with awards for the first  three boats. J Class sailing takes place on the second Monday each Month . Club members regularly travel to take part in the Northern and Midland Series events held at  different venues throughout the North and Midlands.

Classes of yacht sailed by the club

International one metre (IOM)

This class has developed into the most popular of the radio classes and a large fleet of these yachts are sailed and raced around the UK. These boats have an overall length of 1 metre, with three sail rigs utilizing one-design sail plans. The boat has a minimum weight restriction and there are maximum  and minimum restrictions for the draught and weight of fin and bulb. IOM Regattas are held on the fourth Saturday of the month. In 2017 the Club are hosting both a Winter and Summer Round of the Northern District series.

J Class

This is a replica of an America Cup yacht; it has restricted sail and hull design with a low draught, making it suitable for sailing in shallow water. Sailed mainly in light airs on the second Monday each month.
